When Writing Your Fundraising Annual Appeal, Remember… It’s All About The Story!

May 9th, 2008 PamelaGrow Posted in Writing | No Comments »

When approaching development writing, whether it’s for a grant proposal, an annual appeal, a brochure, or an online appeal, the secret is to always keep in mind your donor. As Terry Axelrod, founder of the Benevon method of building lifelong donors, notes, an organization’s “emotional hook” is critical to fundraising success.

What is an “emotional hook?” Consider the two following recent annual appeal letters (names have been changed):

Dear UniversitySchool Alumni & Friends:

The UniversitySchool began this academic year with 576 new students – all promising, all enthusiastic, and most willing to shoulder tremendous debt in pursuit of a University graduate education. Costs for one year of study at UniversitySchool now total $56,850, including tuition, fees, and expenses.

The financial aid we offer is frequently the deciding factor in whether these students come to UniversitySchool or choose another institution. We must remain competitive with our peers – schools with much larger endowments who can offer more generous financial aid packages.

Giving to the Annual Fund at UniversitySchool really makes a difference. The Annual Fund helped the School to provide a landmark amount of $4.2 million in fellowships for 86% of the best and brightest students this year. With your support we can provide even more next year.

Blah, blah, blah.”

Now, if you’re still with me after that uninspiring tome, read the following:

Dear Pamela (personalized):

Somewhere along the way Robyn lost her voice. She had it when she was born. She cried and laughed, and when she started talking, you could hardly get her to stop. She had a voice when she was jumping rope or playing hide ‘n seek.

Then it was gone. Too much feeling like a “have not.” Too much nothing to do. Too much nobody home. Too much empty lots. Too much waiting for failure. Too much and too little.

Too often, people without money feel like they are nobodies, with nothing to say, and it won’t make a difference even if they did. Some people look for their voice with fists. Some look for their voice with guns. Some look in bottles.

We help people rediscover their voice in art. Their art. And with their voice comes power.”

Do you see the difference?

Yet, appeal letter #1 is more the standard, accepted letter you’re likely to receive. Statistics, not stories. And no doubt it gets donors. But there’s no “emotional hook,” there’s nothing to make you care. I’m betting that you wanted to read on in letter #2. You wanted to find out more about this organization. Frankly I wanted to find out about Robyn and how this organization changed her life. If letter #2 had provided a story about a real individual, rather than a composite, it would have been even more effective.

Your organization’s stories are all around you. They are in the thank you cards your program receives, the messages on the machine in your office, in emails, conversations, and in speeches at recognition events. If your program isn’t in the habit of collecting testimonials, make it a top priority! Actively seek them out by sending surveys to your clients and donors. Get in the habit of keeping a tape recorder handy, and set up a comment page on your website.

When it comes to development writing, break the rules. And remember, it’s ALL ABOUT THE STORY.

Pamela has worked in the nonprofit arena since 1995. Since 2003 she has had her own private consultancy, assisting nonprofit organizations with proposal development, prospect research, annual appeal strategies and communication planning. Pamela is the author of

Get Your Writing Fighting Fit - A Book Review

May 9th, 2008 MaryAnnShank Posted in Writing | No Comments »

Systemize! Strip it down! Eliminate! Accentuate!

It sounds like a college cheer. Rah! Rah! Rah-Rah-Rah!

Actually, it’s a lot more than a college cheer. It is the way professional editors polish writing. Even Asimov and Hemmingway had editors. In fact, without their editors, they wouldn’t be the acclaimed writers that they are.

I wouldn’t presume to be a polished writer myself, but I know that I see so much lousy writing on the web that I wish everyone had Audrey Own at their elbow, forcing them to write better.

Although we can’t all capture Audrey’s time, we can review the editing techniques that she so generously shares with us in “Get Your Writing Fighting Fit”. In eleven snappy chapters she takes us from sloppy to sublime. It’s part of her editing philosophy to keep it snappy: “Lean, mean writing keeps your readers keen” (p.6).

First Audrey examines the elements that editors look for when they do their editing task. Things like words, sentences, paragraphs and chapters – all the good, the bad and the truly ugly.

Then she shares her seven step Quick Assessment Process. Here is how you and I can create writing that flows with a zing. We are to take only two pages of our project, and we set a timer to limit us. Then, with a swirl of circles and X’s, looking for very specific items, our writing emerges with strength and vitality. And it’s all done in a matter of a few minutes.

For instance, one of her steps to writing success is to read just the first sentence of each paragraph. Reading just that much, does the writing convey the general idea? It should. The first sentence is that important. If it does not, that is an area of your writing that needs attention.

One of Audrey’s editing techniques is to give variety to sentence and paragraph length and structure. Mix it up, she calls it.

Like here.

This is a great editing system. It is clear, direct, fast, and very doable for most writers.

Keep in mind that “editing” is not “writing”. “Editing” is what enhances our “writing”. Before editing can do you a blimey bit of good, you need to start with solid writing. Your idea needs to be there, composed in reasonable sentences and paragraphs.

Then put your own writing through Audrey’s great seven step editing process and Bingo! You’ve got a great piece of prose.

Pick up your copy of “Get Your Writing Fighting Fit” at http://www.writershelper.com/gywffsales.html . It’s worth every penny of the $29.00 cost. And while you are at Audrey’s website, take a look around. You’ll discover slews of more great ideas too.

It is so easy to slip into bad writing habits, even truly awful writing habits. We all do it. So once in a while, put your writing through a solid editing review. You will probably be amazed at what you discover. You and I may never be Hemingway, but we needn’t be Prudy Hackaway either (she’s the one who never got published).

MaryAnn Shank has been writing for the business world for over 20 years. She is the force behind Business Plan Master and Your Network Marketing Coach. As a business plan editor/reviewer, she has seen more awful writing than she cares to think about, and considers Audrey Owen

Learn More About Sexy Teddies And Bodysuits

May 9th, 2008 AmandaCotterill Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Sexy teddies and bodysuits may be quite popular today, but only recently they were considered new and shocking. Symbols of the sexual liberation of the 1920s flapper movement, sexy teddies and bodysuits have a short but interesting history. Provided here is a beginner’s guide to these sexy lingerie pieces.

What Are Sexy Teddies and Bodysuits?

Teddies are one-piece garments that combine a camisole top with attached panties. Bodysuits are generally stretchy one-piece items that resemble leotards or one-piece swimsuits. While teddies generally feature short sleeves or straps and short panties, bodysuits offer more choices in style. Some bodysuits are long-sleeved and/or ankle-length, while others feature straps or sleeveless styles and high-cut legs.

Early 20th Century

Teddies originated in the early 20th century. At that time, bloomers were in fashion, particularly among young, athletic women. Corsets were going out of style in response to increasing concerns about health risks. Early teddies were generally made of soft cotton and featured a loosely fitted camisole top with thigh-length baggy shorts. The wide-legged design of the shorts made the teddy resemble a dress, not unlike later culottes. Sexy teddies had not yet been invented, although when compared to other styles of the era, the teddy could be considered somewhat sexy in design.

Flapper Era

The flapper era ushered in the age of lingerie. Sexy teddies were one of the earliest forms of sexy lingerie. Sensual materials began to be used, particularly silk and lace. Though teddies remained loose and dress-like, straps became narrower, hemlines crept upward and the garments became more tailored. Focus was given to the look of sexy teddies, as well as comfort.

The 1930s to 1980s

As fashion moved in new directions, sexy teddies fell out of favour. Although some women continued to wear them, teddies would not be resurrected in popular culture until the 1980s.

The 1980s

Following the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, the 1980s brought a more relaxed culture in which underwear was openly sexualized and heavily advertised. From Michael J. Fox’s bright purple briefs in Back to the Future to Madonna’s underwear-as-outerwear fetish culture, celebrities brought sexy underwear to the forefront.

Sexy teddies came back into style. Unlike the dress-like silhouettes of their predecessors, however, modern teddies were shorter, tighter and unapologetically sexual in nature. New materials such as Lycra and spandex offered a form fit that was not possible only a few years before.

Simultaneously, the 1980s brought a new interest in exercise and healthy living. The aerobics culture, combined with the possibilities of spandex, gave birth to a new garment - the bodysuit. At that time, bodysuits were primarily outerwear garments. First worn strictly for sports, then later redesigned for use as shirts, bodysuits worked well with the tightly tucked-in look that was then in vogue.

The 1990s to Present

In the 1990s, grunge culture replaced exercise culture and bodysuits went out of style. However, their natural similarity to sexy teddies brought the bodysuit into the world of lingerie. Today, sexy teddies and bodysuits have become a single category of sexy lingerie. From demure to outright sexual, with or without leg pieces, with or without sleeves, today’s sexy teddies and bodysuits are flexible, functional and always sexy.

Amanda Cotterill has been involved in the erotic lingerie uk market for many years. This article outlines the benefits of women wearing bodysuits as if that needed much explaining! Please include this credit if you use this article.

Ebooks Writing: How To Write Ebooks With Minimum Effort For Maximum Profits!

May 9th, 2008 SergeDandelin Posted in Writing | No Comments »

There are a lot of different ways to inform people about different ideas and products on the internet. However, one of the fastest growing ways is, of course, ebooks. These are books that you write on the internet that are made to be distributed only by way of the internet. This can include email, downloads, or posting them on web sites. There is good news and bad news about ebooks.

The good news is that just about anyone can write an ebook, and the bad news is that just because anyone can write one, does not mean that they are all going to turn out great. It can be hard to write an ebook that people are going to want to read. The key when writing ebooks is to minimize your effort and maximize your profits. That is not easy. However, it can be done.

There are two different ways to go about writing an ebook with little effort. The first way is to, of course, do it yourself. Doing it yourself is going to cost you a little bit of effort no mater how you look at it. However, if your topic is well researched, and you know your targeted niche, then you are going to be able to type up an ebook with very little effort. Your knowledge worth money. So don’t be affraid to use your knowledge to write an ebook. Make your knowledge sell! There are a thousand ways to stretch your knowledge into a product worth.

The great news is that when you make an ebook yourself, you are sure that it’s going to turn out the way that you want it to. However, the down side to writing your own ebook is the fact that if you do not like it, the only person you have to blame is yourself. If you are a poor copywriter, it would be a good idea to consider another option for creating your ebook.

The other option about writing an ebook is, of course to hire a freelance writer. This can be one of the easiest ways to write an ebook. All you have to do is tell the freelancer what you are looking for, and they type it up. They only have to make one copy, because you can just copy it and make more yourself. This by far is the easiest way to make an ebook and requires little to no effort.

The only downside to hiring a freelance writer is for that reason right there, you have to hire them! That means it’s going to cost you money. However, usually the amount of money the ebook is going to bring in, far out weights the amount of money you spent on it. Advertising on the internet has never been easier than it is today. To make sure that you get the most out of the internet you should try making or hiring someone (unless you’re a very good copywriter) to make your own ebook.

How To Write Truly Compelling Website Copy Like An Expert Copywriter

May 9th, 2008 SergeDandelin Posted in Writing | No Comments »

If you have been running an online business for any length of time, you should be aware that creating effective website copy is the single, most important factor that will make the difference between your success and failure online. You may have a flood of targeted traffic coming to your website but that won’t change anything if you have a poor website copy. Most of all, all your advertising dollars will be totally and completely wasted.

There is a lot more to writing a compelling copy article than just what meets the eye. Unlike a book or other form of information, not everyone is going to start from the same place. Because of that, copywriting for the internet can actually be the hardest form of writing. Whenever you write an article for a web page you have to be aware that everyone is not going to start in the same place. In a book, everyone starts on page one, and works their way through.

However, on the internet, thanks to the search engines, sometimes people will be dropped into text that is halfway through the article. That means that you have to be able to restate some of your key points without having to repeat yourself over and over again. This does not mean that you have to keep saying the same thing or repeat what you said; it just means that you have to make sure you keep highlighting main ideas.

Next, you have to make the article jump out at people. You have to know that most of the people that use the internet are looking for fast answers, and most people only give a web site a few seconds to grab them and draw them in. Thus, you have to know that people are, for the most part, only going to scan your article to see if they like what you are saying. Then if they see something that they like they will start reading the whole thing. You have a matter of seconds to grab your readers’ attention.

Last but not least, you have to know that the internet is open to everyone around the world. Not just people from your country are going to be looking at your web article. That means that sometimes it’s a great idea to have the article written in different languages. The best way to do this is to put a link on the page that is in a different language so that people can read it.

Then that link can take them to another language. Just because people are from different parts of the world does not mean that we can not talk to them. We have to be able to get our points across to people all over the world. If you can not do that then you are cutting off half of your visitors, because they can not read what you are saying, and that is not something that you want to do.

To Your Success!

Safe Cosmetic Surgery

May 9th, 2008 UchennaAni-Okoye Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Cosmetic surgery, just like any other medial procedure is inherently risky and can carry potentially devastating consequences which can scar you for the rest of your life. Luckily, most doctors and surgeons are highly skilled professionals, having worked years learning their trade and usually some more years after that before they are able to get to the stage of carrying about invasive procedures, which usually means the cosmetic surgery will be conducted by a highly skilled, highly experienced and consequently safe professional.

Unfortunately, however, this isn’t always the case and sometimes problems may arise, whether it’s a result of negligence, human error or just simple bad fortune. For the patient, there isn’t much he or she can do while lying on the table, but there are ways before and after the procedure you can deploy to help you avoid infection and prevent most of the difficulties that can arise with such cosmetic procedures.

Cosmetic surgery usually entails major trauma to the body, while it is generally conducted privately for cosmetic reason (as the name implies), this kind of surgery can also be carried out for appropriate medical reasons such as low self esteem and disfigurement as a result of fire. As a result, you can never truly be prepared for any plastic surgery procedure unless you are consciously choosing to have the procedure carried out on your behalf.

If you have made the decision to have the procedure carried out, the first process you should attempt to do would be to improve your general fitness and health by increasing the amount of exercise you do and changing your diet to one that is high in vitamins and minerals. The fitness aspect of things will ensure that your body is able to cope with the trauma it will sustain and it will help you on the road to recovery sooner than if you were unfit. Likewise, the improvement in your diet will not only benefit your health, but it will also help provide a means in preventing infection and ensuring your recovery process will similarly be improved as compared to someone who has maintained a poor diet thus having a weaker immune system.

Another thing you should note before you have any cosmetic surgery is to refrain from smoking (if you’re a smoker) for several weeks either side of the operation or alternatively you could just give up smoking altogether. Smoking can cause infection and will easily run down your immune system and your body’s natural defenses that naturally help you recover from your condition and fight off any germs that make their way into your wound. Ideally, you would want to kick the habit altogether due to wider health implications, but if that is not an option for you, you should at least try to hold back smoking for at least a month or so until things have settled down.

Finally, it is very important that you ensure you take plenty of rest following the operation and do not go back to work or any other strenuous activity too soon. Whatever the procedure, there will be a period of time that you will require to recovery, so make the most of your time to relax and practically do nothing.

Learning How To Accentuate The Natural You

May 8th, 2008 AnthonyKouma Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Your hairstyle plays a crucial role in accentuating the shape of your face. Even your facial features can be highlighted or drawn away from with the right cut. The hairstyle you choose normally depends on the shape of your face, the event you are attending, the weather in your particular location, and the type of dress you wear on a daily basis. The most important thing to remember above all else is to allow your hair to do whatever it does naturally.

Trying to force curly hair to be straight is a big no-no according to industry-leading professional hairstylists. The process involved in performing such a thing is dreadfully damaging to the hair and the underlying hair follicles. A chemical is applied to the hair and allowed to remain on for a short time. After, a flat iron (a styling tool with two hot plates) is used to heat the hair and remove all kinks and bends. The immediate effect is beautiful, but the long-term use of such a treatment can irreversibly damage hair.

On the other side we look at straight hair forced to become curly. This process too can become quite evasive. In a method that hairstylists call a curling permanent, a chemical is applied to the hair and curling rods of different lengths and thickness are rolled into the locks close to the scalp. Calling this technique “permanent” is baffling because it is not permanent at all. In a few months, you will be returning to your local salon to have it performed again. This process as well “fries” the hair and in the long run damages the healthy straight hair you began with.

This brings us to the shape of the face. You see a gorgeous style on you best friend and decide that you must have it done exactly the same. After all, your bodies and choice of clothing are the same, why shouldn’t your hairstyles be. You spend your whole afternoon at your stylist and when the final effect is unveiled, you stare unbelievably into the mirror. What happened!! Your stylist assures you that it’s the same hairstyle that he gave your best friend yesterday. She looks like the princess and you look like the ugly stepsister. I have two words for you, facial shape.

The shape of your face plays a crucial part in hairstyle selection. A haircut that looks good on a heart-shaped face won’t necessarily look nice on a person with a round face. Most of the European hairstylists agree that nearly every style and length is suitable for an oval-shaped face.

Now comes the big question, long or short? There are many varying opinions regarding this subject so the decision is actually quite difficult. There are so many variables to consider when making this decision. Here are a few questions you need to ask yourself before making a choice.

• What is your climate like?

• What activities do you perform daily?

• How many times do you have to devote to your hair?

No matter what style or length you choose, make sure that you take the time to sit with your stylist and discuss the pros and cons of the hairstyle you are thinking of trying. The most important thing to remember about hair is that regardless how bad it turned out; it will always grow back.

Write More, Write Faster - Plan Your Writing For Success

May 8th, 2008 AngelaBooth Posted in Writing | No Comments »

Want to write more and write faster too? Let’s discover the secrets of great writing habits, which completely eliminate procrastination and writer’s block.

Great writing habits start when you realize that writing is a process. Although others’ writing (including articles and books) may seem effortless - as though a piece of writing has been written in a single seamless session - that’s always far from the case.

If you understand the writing process, and that it’s messy and chaotic, then your own scrambled writing process will seem natural to you, because not only is it completely normal, but you’ll realize it’s essential.

You can’t create without chaos. If you try, you’ll choke your writing. Writing will be difficult, if not impossible.

Let’s look at three tips which will help you to get comfortable with chaos and to write more and faster too.

1. Set writing goals - what do you want to write?

All writing starts with setting goals for yourself: process goals, which only you can accomplish, and which you control.

For example, you may set a goal to have your writing appear in a particular magazine, or on a specific Web site by a certain date. This is a worthwhile goal, however it’s not a process goal that’s solely under your control.

A process goal would be: “By ________ (date) my essay for _______ (magazine name) is complete.”

Always set process goals - goals which you control. Yes, you can set financial goals, however the basis of all your financial goals MUST be process goals. There’s no point in setting a goal of making $250,000 a year from your writing if that goal isn’t supported by many process goals - if you don’t write enough, you won’t sell enough. It really is that simple.

So set process goals, and enter the daily tasks you must complete to meet those goals into your planner.

Break the tasks down - chunk them.

2. Separate planning, drafting and writing

Writing is a process which involves planning, drafting and writing.

Always chunk your writing process right down.

For example, I plan the articles I’ll write the following week each Sunday. I write the topics, the titles, and the outlines for all the articles.

During the week, I draft the articles further, and then I write them. Drafting for me involves a combination of free writing and mind maps. I separate the draft for a project from the writing by at least one day, often by a week.

3. Down-size your expectations while you write

I hope you have great expectations for your writing. Confidence is vital.

However, when it comes to the actual writing process, take the pressure off. All I expect from myself during a writing session is that I write - that I complete a certain number of words, and that those words are formed into sentences. That’s all.

Writing is a whole-brain exercise. It’s creative and mysterious. If you read the first draft material of any professional writer you’ll get a shock. It’s a mess, and that’s fine. The writing muse sends you hints, which you write down.

Over several sessions, a project takes shape. If you demand that your writing is like typing, that the finished project gushes from your fingertips like water from a tap, you’ll be disappointed.

If you take the above tips to heart, you’ll find writing easy. And once that happens, you’ll write more, and write faster too.

Want to write more? Angela Booth’s writing class, “Write More And Make More Money From Your Writing: Develop A Fast, Fun Productive Writing Process” is based on lessons she developed for her private coaching students. Her ebook “Top 70 Writing Tips To Help You To Write More” shows you how to end procrastination for good and write more.
