Book Review: Differentiating Reading Instruction by Laura Robb

June 10th, 2008 SimonBarrett Posted in Writing | No Comments »

OK, so maybe this book does not have mass appeal. It is written by a teacher and aimed at other teachers, the plot, how to entice school kids to read. Reading is the very cornerstone of learning. Without the skill life is pretty darn hard for a school kid, and even worse for an adult.

I am an avid reader, and have been since a very small child. I read for fun then, and I read for fun now. Reading is escapism, reading is learning, reading is the gateway to knowledge. Alas it is also often treated as a boring subject by both teachers and pupils. I know that during my Grammar School (High School in the US) days I hated English Lit, it was taught in an incredibly boring fashion. I defy any 14 year old to get excited about Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Mayor Of Casterbridge,’ or just about anything by William Shakespeare. Kids don’t want to read these books, they are too difficult. With Shakespeare you have to deal with archaic language and metaphors that even well read adults have problems grasping, Thomas Hardy on the other hand just wears you down, page after boring page of dreary narrative!

Maybe the high spot of my school career was Orwell and ‘1984,’ but even this classic was reduced to nothing. It was about 5 years after I finished school that I actually picked up a book for fun. The fun had been beaten out of me by the ridiculous approach taken by the school system.

Robb is an educator and innovator who has used her teaching experience to create a format where reading can be once again fun. Reading is maybe the most important aspect of teaching, it matters little what the subject is, the pupil needs to be able to read to learn.

One of the biggest issues facing any educator is the wide spectrum of abilities with the kids in the classroom, it may be grade 8, but there will be some kids that read at grade 4 level, there may even be some at grade 10. To aim only at the grade level results in only teaching to a small percentage of the class. Some will be lost and not able to keep up, while others will be bored, not feeling challenged, and generally frustrated.

The key, Robb explains is to develop techniques where everyone wins. Why does the entire class have to read the same book? Why not use a theme rather than a text? And why not engage the class in talking about the theme? By making the class thematic and using multiple texts suddenly you can gear material to the varied abilities of the class, a win-win situation, everyone can operate within their comfort zone, and learn!

Even when it is necessary from a curriculum standpoint to use a standard text, by being creative in your teaching methods everyone can gain.

I am not a teacher, well not by the traditional definition, but I am peripherally involved in the adult literacy arena, and many of Robb’s ideas could be converted to work in the adult world. One of the biggest problems I find with many poor readers is that they can read the words, but cannot assimilate the words into a cohesive idea. Differentiating Reading Instruction is chock full to the brim with strategies to resolve this problem.

This should be a must read book for anyone working within the teaching profession, the ideas are applicable in just about every subject.

You can get your copy of Differentiating Reading Instruction from Amazon.

Book Review: Succession by Herbert Lobsenz

June 10th, 2008 SimonBarrett Posted in Writing | No Comments »

I have my finger in many different pies, and one of those pies is an adult literacy program. Although I am only peripherally involved. I am always on the lookout for suitable material. Every book I read gets pigeonholed into one of three categories, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. There is no doubt in my mind that Succession belongs in the Advanced group.

The writing style reminded me of a genre that was popular in the late 60’s and early 70’s, and during that period many authors fell for the lure. John LeCarre for example released The Naive And Sentimental Lover, while critically acclaimed it did not sell well, it was too complex in structure for many readers.

Succession is complex in its structure, the language is simple enough, but the concepts and constructs are involved. It is not so much a flowing story, but rather a series of sometimes disjointed vignettes that the reader must assimilate themselves. That is not meant as a criticism, merely an observation.

Herbert Lobsenz like his books is a complex subject. There are few authors that win a coveted Harper Prize (1960) and then decide to abandon writing in favor of the corporate world only to return over 40 years later.

Let’s talk about the book. Succession has at its core Jake Garrison who some years prior had abandoned the business world in favor of becoming a writer. Alas his genre, Civil War ‘faction’ does not seem to be garnering the acclaim and kudos from the publishers that he thinks he deserves.

The turning point for Jake arrives when his father is taken ill, and is obviously not long for this earth. With the elder Garrison fading away in hospital Jake makes the discovery that his father does not have the money to cover his bills. Jake comes from honorable stock, and the his ‘honorable’ gene takes him from his writing back into the murky world of business as a way of covering the growing expenses.

His old acquaintance Carnusty is happy to loan the money to Jake, but there are catches. Jake once again becomes embroiled in industry, this time checking out a failing typewriter company. But rather than operating on the up and up, Jake is forced to go undercover in the guise of being the new editor of the company newsletter.

Through very short vignettes author Herbert Lobsenz takes us on a wild ride inside Jakes mind. His insecurity at home, his insecurity with the relationship between his wife and Carnusty, his thoughts about his father. All of these prey on Jake, the doubts reaching ear splitting volume when his wife announces that she is pregnant.

Can he resolve these issues?

Well only you can decide, and you can do that by buying your copy from Amazon. The author also maintains a blog with his recollections from the past at Old Time Writer.

Ostrich Leather Handbags - Luxury That Lasts For Years

June 10th, 2008 KitHeathcock Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

If you are looking for a truly luxury handbag, one of the most exclusive leathers of all is ostrich leather. Soft and luxurious it is also a tough leather that keeps its good looks for many years and its elegantly patterned texture, spotted with the characteristic quill follicle polka dots, is the epitome of restrained chic.

It is no wonder that top designers love to work with ostrich leather. Its suppleness means that they can work it into any design they please, to create innovative handbags and it also takes color exceptionally well, making an infinite range of wonderful colors possible. Above all ostrich leather produces bags of amazing quality that are perfect for the luxury handbag market.

Ostrich is one of the more expensive leathers in the world, as genuine luxury never comes cheap. This is in part due to its excellent quality, but also a matter of supply and demand. There is only a limited production of ostrich leather in the world, as ostrich farming is a highly specialized business and there are many designers and handbag manufacturers who are ready to snap up the top quality leather as soon as it is put on the market.

Find an ostrich handbag that you love, in a timeless style that will not go out of fashion, and it will be an excellent investment. These bags really do last for years, long enough to be passed down to the next generation and treasured by them too! A well-made ostrich bag can last on average 30 years, while the most you can expect from a calf-skin handbag is about 5 years of use. Ostrich leather is naturally water resistant too, which makes it more hardwearing than other exotic leathers such as crocodile and python leather.

Ostriches are sustainably farmed with the traditional centre of production being the Oudtshoorn area of South Africa. There is no wastage in this farming practice, as the feathers are used both in the fashion industry and for making rather more mundane feather dusters, the meat is also used and provides a healthy lean alternative to beef and the leather can all be used to produce luxury goods. Ostriches are raised in the open with plenty of space in their natural habitat, and by their nature cannot be mass produced adding to the exclusivity of their products.

When you are looking at ostrich handbags you will find that some are patterned all over with the quill pattern polka dots, while others use both the patterned skin and smooth skin for different parts of the handbag. The patterned leather is called the crown leather and is the most in demand and therefore the most expensive part of the skin. The smooth skin from the side of the ostrich has all the same qualities of suppleness and resilience but lacking the characteristic spots, it is considerably cheaper.

If you want to find a more affordable ostrich leather handbag, look for bags from reputable companies that make use of this smooth leather, either for the sides of the bags or by alternating it with the patterned crown leather as a design feature. You will be able to get far more bag for your money this way and enjoy all the amazing qualities of genuine ostrich leather for years.

Martine Aubry – The Lady In Waiting.

June 10th, 2008 JohnnySummerton Posted in World Affairs | No Comments »

She might have been absent from national politics for the past eight years, but now a one-time leading light of the Socialist party, Martine Aubry, appears to be back in favour.

Aubry is being touted – not least by herself – as a figure behind which activists could unite in the tussle for the leadership of the party due in November.

Many within the party are keen to avoid a high profile media brawl between what are considered to be the two main contenders for the post - S

Women’s Medical Discovery: G Spot Injection

June 10th, 2008 LisaOrtega Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Inviting new ideas into one’s life to enhance the degree of sexual satisfaction between partners can be a rewarding experience. There are a number of options available to spice up one’s sex life and these options are making it easier to have minimally invasive treatments performed which are temporary and safe.

For many, the decision to try g spot injection is obviously a personal one. A cosmetic surgeon can discuss the procedure and help the patient to become more familiar with it and how it works. Generally the shot is performed in less than an hour on the initial appointment and even less time if the shot is repeated later. The cosmetic surgeon will use a local anesthesia to numb the inner wall of the vagina, where the g spot is located. This will then be followed by the shot after the measurements of the vagina are taken. This allows the surgeon to easily access the injection site. The procedure is meant as a means to enhance the dimensions of the g spot, resulting in a more sensitive and more pronounced g spot. This results in greater stimulation during sex. As with any other sort of enhancement to one’s sex life, the g spot injection is meant to be enjoyed yet it is important to be aware of benefits and risks.

The g-shot itself is comprised of human collagen which is bio-engineered in a lab. This is then taken into a syringe and injected beneath the skin of the vaginal wall. The dimensions of the area are thus expanded and the results become more prominent in a few weeks or months. The treatment will generally need to be repeated every four to six months, but this time period varies from person to person. Everyone is unique and different bodies handle injections differently. If the immune system is strong, the foreign collagen may be removed in a more rapid manner. It all depends on the person’s body. There have been no serious side effects associated with the treatment as of yet and since the treatment is fairly new, it is important to understand the procedure and to be aware of any potential effects.

For those interested in the g spot injection, there are a number of resources available to gain a greater understanding of the procedure. Speaking with a trained and experienced cosmetic surgeon is a great place to start, or even doing your own research. It is good to examine what motives and desires are attached to the decision to undergo a procedure, especially one that involves cosmetic surgery or procedures. Understanding what the desired end result is helps to make the decision clearer and more satisfactory. Exploring one’s sexuality with the help of a cosmetic surgeon is not necessarily a minor decision so it is best to go into the procedure with a full awareness of the benefits and risks, understanding what you desire to achieve as an end result. Since the treatment is temporary, if the results are not desirable, no future action is necessary and the body will return to its natural and functional state on its own.

Gifts To Enkindle The Hearts On Christmas

June 10th, 2008 SyahrulAzlan Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Perhaps, you never have noticed that time had flown fast as there are only a couple of months to go already before Christmas, haven’t you? Wow, that would mean a lot of gifts to give and to receive as well! He he. I bet you don’t want to be one of those people who are always on the rush when doing their shopping sprees to buy for Christmas gifts. Who would want to get caught in the middle of the traffic anyway? Want to give gifts and still don’t have the idea on what to buy? Are those gifts for men or for women? Or are those for the little tots that you always wanted to make happy or simply, a present to treat yourself on Christmas?

It is really heart-warming to buy gifts during Christmas. But shopping for Christmas gifts in the middle of the year? Nah… It would probably make you raise your eyebrow in awe and perhaps question yourself or those people who do the activity. That may sound something quirky for you. You may conclude that those peeps that do the advance shopping are just too excited for Christmas. Oh well, you don’t have to do anything with them ‘coz it’s their choice, their happiness in fact. But as you can see, in this fast changing world, you may not notice that days are going fast too and before you know it, it’s Christmas time already. And obviously, people who usually don’t mind the fast-paced time would always see themselves in a Christmas rush. Mind you, it’s not only the people who are always get caught in this kind of dilemma but everything (I mean the items in the stores) as well!

Christmas, as been perceived by everyone as the time of sharing and giving, should not be limited to one fixed date only. It should be commemorated all throughout the year. It doesn’t mean that the act of giving gifts is only determinate during Christmas Day. So it is never too late nor too early to look or to buy for one.

There are a lot of wonderful and nice things around you that you may have not noticed while you are walking along the city streets that can be good prospects to be given as gifts. Stuffs that may not be your 1st choice, but could somehow give you an idea on what to give on Christmas. Mom and Dad are probably talking amorously to each other about that new coat or that funky, pretty dress they have seen and wanted to receive on Christmas. As for the cute moppets at home, they sure have this long list of cool items they would love to receive on Christmas.

Buying Christmas gifts for either men or women can be somehow draining. It would probably bring you from one store to another, searching for the best present you could give to him or her. It may lead you to go out of town, if you are really meticulous, just to buy that splendid, one-of-a-kind gift you are thinking to give as a present. So, what’s that dumb ‘waiting’ for when you can do all the shopping now and celebrate Christmas at this time as well? It would just be a waste of time, thinking and just thinking (and no acting at all) for the gifts you are planning to give.

There are other places, aside from our favorite department stores, that could offer us cool Christmas gift ideas. Why settle on driving from one store to another when you can do it at home, just by sitting and browsing the Internet? Yes! What I’m saying is, the Internet can provide you with the ideas you would love to embrace and items you would likely love to buy too.

If you try searching and shopping online, you can be engulfed with the wide array of choices that you never imagined could be displayed to you. And unlike any other stores, you can expect that there’s no ‘CLOSED! WILL OPEN AT CHRISTMAS TME ONLY & BE SURE YOU GET BACK HERE DURING THAT TIME’ sign anywhere! That would be great, wouldn’t it? You won’t have to engage yourself to the Christmas rush experience at all juts to buy Christmas gifts for everyone.

To quote back, ‘it’s never too late or never too early for Christmas gifts’ is indeed true. You don’t have to wait for Christmas time to arrive and look and buy as well for the best gifts for your loved ones. Ideas for Christmas gifts can just be right under your mistletoes or just right under your reindeer’s red nose! So, why wait when you can jingle your bells today and celebrate Christmas through giving. Let it snow whole year ’round and may each of us celebrate a very merry Christmas.

June 10th, 2008 SyahrulAzlan Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Jewelry shopping can be considered irksome; however, for many ladies who are fond of these nice and elegant accessories, it is more than enjoyable and very satisfying. But as for those who are trying to find the best and unique jewelries to be given to their beloved someone’s, this task is more than just tiresome, because it would bring you to more than just one jewelry store! Probably, you will get to experience roaming around the whole downtown the whole day before you could finally decide the best choice for her… or him. Tedious, isn’t it?

If you have to opt for jewelries, you should take a very careful step - relax, take time, and examine - before you go for something you think is the best. It’s just like choosing a pursuit in life, if you heedlessly choose the wrong one, you would regret in the future, or perhaps your whole life. You would probably think of the money you have spent for the jewelry, only to find out in the future that you awry bought something not worth it at all. As some say, ‘you seal your fate with the choices you make’, so you should take heed and be very keen in selecting the one that you think is right.

Think for about a thousand, or if it’s okay, then make it a million times, before settling for a jewelry to buy. You need to free yourself from too much excitement, breathe openly, and try to feel yourself. You should be able to manifest within your inner self of what you really want. Savor the moment and make the most of your time.

You don’t need to fret as there are ample pomps of various jewelry collections everywhere. You just have to have the idea on where to find these nice pieces of jewelries you are really looking for. It really doesn’t matter whether it can be from the nearby stores or online, as long as you are sure that you get the best quality. Why not try the Internet? There are a lot of various resources for buying jewelries when you are online. The jewelries they have are fancies. But do not get dismayed, for these fancy jewelries they have can probably exceed your expectations..or maybe your wildest dreams! You can always wear them with hauteur since these are intricately made from the heart..no jape!

And if you are (or your sweetheart maybe is), fond of wearing jewelries during special occasions, that’s not a problem. There are various costume to designer jewelries right on the Information Highway. Unknown to your expectation, you might find something that would make you look and feel glamorous like anyone from the silver screen stars! That would be great, wouldn’t it?

Or if you are in urgent situations, like if you are to attend a wedding ceremony, then you can be the most stunning and can probably look more prettier than the bride herself with a bunch of displays for designer jewelry collections! You can never tell, the newly-wedded couple’s best man may set his precious eyes on you, finding you very much attractive with the lovely dangling jewelries you are wearing.

At most, everyone will surely be able to find something that would best comply their needs especially during special occasions, or something that would suit their own taste or personalities, just by surfing through the web. Or if you opt for something a little more exotic, there are various resources online that you could visit. Why just stick on the finest things that your own town offers when you can be enthralled by something more exquisite without any efforts at all to roam around downtown?

Therefore, take time to think, choose, and reflect for a while. These steps will help you determine the best jewelry items that you are really craving to possess. Always bear in mind that the jewelry will choose you, and not you who’ll choose them! Examine closely on what’s best and what’s not for you, and then after that, you will surely eat your heart out for you will realize that you had made the best and perfect choice.

Female Infertility: General and Ovarian Causes!

June 9th, 2008 LouisBerdman Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Infertility describes a person’s biological inability to contribute to conception. Infertility can also describe a woman’s inability to carry a pregnancy to full term. Reproductive endocrinologists, doctors who specialize in fertility, suggest consulting a doctor if a couple has not conceived after 12 months and the woman is under age 34, or, if the couple has not conceived after 6 months and the woman is over 35. In women over age 35, the eggs quality begins to decline, requiring more rapid attention.

Female infertility can stem from several causes. Some of these are related to a woman’s general health. Others are directly related to the reproductive system. This is the reason that the first step one should take is to have a physician check for the cause of your fertility problems.

General Health Influences on Infertility

Liver or kidney disease or thrombophilia (a problem with the blood clotting mechanism) can cause infertility and problems carrying the fetus to full term. In addition, hypothalamic and pituitary gland problems may not produce enough luteinizing hormones (LH) or follicle stimulating hormones (FSH). These hormones are absolutely necessary to support ovulation and the menstrual cycle. Many times doctors can give estrogen and progestin to make up for this hormonal deficiency, thereby circumventing the problem.

Infertility Caused within the Reproductive System

The reproductive system has sub functions, any of which can cause infertility. The ovary produces eggs to be fertilized. The oviducts (tubes) transport the eggs to the uterus (womb). The uterus nourishes and protects the egg so that if it is fertilized, it can develop into a child. The cervix is the passage between the uterus and the vagina.

Causes of infertility due to ovary disorders

The ovaries perform the first function in the reproductive cycle. They create eggs and send them to the oviducts which bring them to the uterus. The following is a list of ovary disorders which may be worth checking.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, also called PCOS, is an endocrine (hormonal) disorder. It is the most common cause of infertility, occurring in about ten percent of all women. The main symptoms include irregular ovulation and/or menstruation, weight problems, and too many masculine hormones. Irregular ovulation means that often there will not be eggs to be impregnated. Menstruation problems cause an actual pregnancy not to last. While the causes of PCOS are not known, obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance often accompany PCOS. Many physicians miss this, so one should search for a physician who is experienced with this. For overweight women, weight loss can improve the condition

Anovulation is the failure to ovulate (produce eggs) in a woman who should be able to ovulate normally. This can be caused by several factors such as: hormone imbalances, certain medical drugs and recreational drugs, improper nutrition, ongoing physical illness, ongoing mental illness such as depression, prolonged physical exertion, stress, and pituitary or ovarian disfunction. Although anovutaion is a common cause of infertility, it usually treatable by reversing the causes, except for pituitary and ovarian failure.

Poor Ovarian Reserve Sometimes there are just not enough eggs in the ovaries. The eggs also get used up over the years. Other causes of poor ovarian reserve are radiation and chemotherapy, adrenal gland dysfunction, problems with the autoimmune system, and genetics. There are also cases where the reasons are cannot be determined.

This is separate from the quality of eggs, which tends to decrease with age. Nature prepares mankind to start reproduction at a young age. When women have children on an ongoing basis, the quality of the eggs is “frozen” and they remain high quality, even at later ages. However, if there is no reproduction during the early years, egg quality tends to decline.

Premature Ovarian Failure, abbreviated as POF, is the loss for ovary function before age forty. Premature ovarian failure is categorized by low levels of the estrogen hormone and high levels of follicle producing hormones (FSH). These hormonal levels indicate that the ovaries are not responding to the FSH in the bloodstream. Therefore, the ovaries do not produce estrogen. Without estrogen, fertile eggs cannot develop.

While the causes are not completely known, radiation, chemotherapy, autoimmune problems, and genetic disorders, such as Fragile X syndrome and Turners syndrome are thought to contribute to premature ovarian syndrome.

Age forty is a somewhat arbitrary number chosen for practical purposes. An age had to be set to distinguish POF from normal menopause. It can actually be anywhere from the teenage years on. However, by age forty, about one percent of women have POF, which includes menopause symptoms. The average menopause age is approximately fifty one, usually ranging from forty five to fifty five.

In actuality, about 5 to 10 percent of the women with POF do become pregnant with no treatment. Currently, the most effective strategy for dealing with POF is to use donor eggs to have children. Another strategy is to adopt children.

Luteul Phase deficiency (LPD)

Luteul phase deficiencies can be caused by abnormal follicle development or abnormal luteinization. In both of these situations, the corpus luteum in the ovary follicle does not generate enough progesterone. Normally, the corpus luteum in the ovary produces luteinizing hormone (LH). LH causes the body to produce progesterone; a hormone which causes the thickening of the blood vessels in the uteral lining. These blood vessels form a protective, nourishing network, where the fertilized egg can develop into a baby. A lack of progesterone causes the blood vessel network to weaken and drop out of the uterine, ending the pregnancy. This is similar to what happens in a normal monthly period, when there is no pregnancy.

LPD is found in 3-20% of patients who are infertile and in 5-60% of patients who experience recurrent pregnancy loss. However, data show that 6-10% of women who are fertile also have an inadequate luteal phase.

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer also prevents the ovaries from functioning properly.

Summary

Infertility can be caused by general health problems such as: kidney or liver disease; thrombophilia; and hypothalamic and pituitary gland deficiencies. The reproductive system consists of five organs including, the ovaries, the oviducts, the uterus, the cervix, and the vagina. We have outlined six causes of ovarian disorders, most of which can be successful treated. To prevent infertility, women could consider have children at younger ages. Fertility starts to decline at age twenty six. Around age thirty five, fertility begins to drop much more rapidly. If this is a concern seek a physicians advice immediately.

Super Foods to Reduce Stress and Feel Fabulous

June 9th, 2008 IrinaWardas Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Numerous studies show that one thing we all have in common in 21st century is stress. How often do we get really stressed out? Once a month…a week…a day?

Did you know that more than 300.000 people a day take time off work because of a stress related illness? When overstressed, we may have headaches or migraines, anxiety attacks, pounding heart, sadness and depression, tension in back of neck or head, stomach problems, irritability, moodiness, bad temper, overeating, fatigue, frequent colds, etc.

Are you always busy, always on the run, always stressed out? Do you have no time for taking care of yourself because you always put children, relatives, relationship, and career first priority? No wonder you have no time to eat regularly! Sounds familiar?

According to Ayurveda, we are what we eat. When we are stressed out, we need better quality meals to help us stay focused, grounded, in balance. But instead, we get trapped in cycles: we eat too much junk/processed food – we get even more stressed out - we eat even more refined, processed, junk. What shall we do? We have to break the cycle!

The first step in helping with stress overload is to eat more food that can help us to reduce stress and feel much better.

High-fiber foods are digested slowly, which can help control blood sugar. High fiber foods can also help with constipation, which can be a trigger for a stress overload because of high amount of toxins that are not eliminated.

Low sugar meals can help stabilize insulin level and reduce stress.

Overall, lean protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates can help you to stay balanced.

Whole foods rich in anti-stress vitamins and minerals are stress fighters and we have to incorporate them in our diet as much as possible.

Magnesium. It has been found that people under stress have low magnesium levels, indicating that magnesium may be beneficial to those under stress. A deficiency of magnesium interferes with transmission of nerve and muscle impulses, causing irritability and nervousness. Almonds, apples, apricots, brown rice, garlic, leafy vegetables, spinach, salmon, etc. contain magnesium.

Calcium. Our body needs a proper balance between magnesium and calcium to have a healthy stress response. Healthy foods rich in Calcium are almonds, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, kale, kelp, mustard greens, oats, prunes, salmon, seafood, sesame seeds, tofu, yogurt / kefir, etc.

B6. Studies show that people who are depressed have low levels of B6 and serotonin. We need eat more avocados, bananas, fish, spinach, walnuts-to get more Vitamin B6;

B12. As we know, B12 deficiency can contribute to many anxiety disorders caused by stress, such as hormonal imbalances, blood sugar fluctuations, chronic fatigue, depression, irritability, moodiness, nervousness. We need to eat more salmon, seafood, sea vegetables (if we don’t eat meat) to get more Vitamin B12.

Folic acid. Studies show that folic acid helps make dopamine - the real key to transmitting feelings of pleasure.
